  Loire Estuary 2007. 2009. 2011
Nantes <> Saint-Nazaire
From 1 June to 1 September
A 60 km art trail to discover, or rediscover, exceptional sites along the Loire River. The estuary will welcome artwork from 30 artists of international renown, including Anish Kapoor, Daniel Buren, Felice Varini and Kinya Maruyama. Discover the area through monumental, fun and surprising works of modern art guide.
An amazing art trail to discover exceptional sites along the Loire Estuary, from Nantes to Saint-Nazaire.
The Loire Estuary is the physical and symbolic link between Nantes and Saint-Nazaire, whose histories have both been greatly influenced by the same port and shipyards.
Visible from the water or from the riverbanks, permanent and ephemeral in situ artworks invade this territory of gigantic industrial buildings and fragile nature reserves. Follow the installations for a novel exploration of the area and discover its heritage and landscapes.
The trail starts in either one of the two cities, incorporating places of both artistic importance (such as Le Grand Café in Saint-Nazaire, the Modern Art Collection of the Pays de la Loire, Nantes’ Museum of Fine Arts, the Lieu Unique and the Gallery of Machines) and historical importance (such as the Castle of the Breton Dukes and Saint-Nazaire’s submarine base, home to Escal’Atlantic).
More than thirty very large art installations by both well-established artists and emerging talents, from Nantes, France and abroad, all of whom have already worked around the world. The artists were chosen for their ability to play with the public space and dimensions of the estuary (60 km long and almost 3 km wide at its mouth):
All along the Loire River Estuary, works by 30 international artists!
Sculptures, fountains, installations, floating artwork, amazing architectural designs, and more!
All the artwork is freely accessible by land (by foot, bike or car, with nearby parking), while a river cruise managed by an artist collective is an extraordinary journey for all five senses (between 6 and 11 euros)!
This year’s artists include:
Atelier Van Lieshout (the Netherlands), Thomas Lanfranchi (France), Daniel Buren - Patrick Bouchain (France), Ange Leccia (France), Los Carpinteros (Cuba), Jean-Luc Courcoult (France), Kinya Maruyama (Japan), Alain Séchas (France), Jeppe Hein (Denmark), Felice Varini (Switzerland), Anish Kapoor (India/GB), Erwin Wurm (Austria), Tadashi Kawamata (Japan), Yan Pei Ming (China/France).
Mirroring the trail’s animated architectural installations, Estuary Nantes <> Saint-Nazaire 2007 is meant to be not only seen, but also experienced, with a programme of lively, out-of-this-world events: a grand opening festival on the Ile-de-Nantes (transformed for the occasion into the “Phenomenal Island"), a literary conference, live entertainment, and more.
