Like the towpath along the Mayenne, the towpaths of the region are specially designated for nature walks and hiking, with a number of “Grande Randonnée” long hiking trails along the riverbanks.
For example, trails “GR3” and “GR3E”, otherwise known as The Bargemen’s Paths, follow the Loire between Angers and Guérande until it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Trail “GR de Pays – Les Basses Vallées Angevines” (“Low Angers Valleys”) runs parallel to the Loir and the Sarthe. Trail “GR 365” follows the Sarthe as it approaches the town of Juigné, running alongside some of the old historic towpath. Trail “GR de Pays, Sèvre and Maine” is yet another trail complete with intermittent riverside views. For more details on the regions’s top 50 nature walks and hiking trails, consult PR “Les Pays de la Loire à pied” (The Western Loire on Foot), a mini-guide recently published by the French Hiking Federation.

Another way to experience the natural beauty of the river is by bike. Most trails are part of “The Loire by Bike” (La Loire à Vélo) network which will eventually run from Cuffy (in Cher) to St-Brévin-les-Pins (in Loire-Atlantic). There are already 150 km of trails open between Angers and Tours just waiting to be discovered.
Horse lovers can explore the Loire on horseback from Angers to the estuary, or by following the towpath along the Mayenne.

Whether on foot, by bike or on horseback, be usure to practice the three R’s: Respect, Responsibility and Reason. Leave no trace of garbage, never pick protected species of flowers or pull leaves from trees, and the friendly and considerate to other path and park users.
