The territory of Loire-Atlantique is largely open to the ocean. Through it runs a great wild river, into which lesser rivers and streams flow. Everywhere there are lakes, ponds and marshes. It's a land where water is king.
The very name of the department spells out its identity, as a place where the waters of the Loire and the waters of the Atlantic are balanced in harmony.
Water – a primary element that nurtures and provides a singular source of beauty, a beauty that is constantly magnified in the endless interplay of light and wind; water has fashioned the shape of this land, as it has moulded the souls of the men that use it and preserve its resources.
